The Writers House in Corsicana Texas

A 1912 Arts & Crafts Home for Self-Directed Creative Retreats

The Writers House is an elegant 1912 Arts & Crafts home in Corsicana, Texas in close proximity to the Corsicana Artist & Writer Residency community and Corsicana’s Historic Downtown. It is located in the Historic Carriage District (1840s-1930s), neighboring the homes of The Residency founders and friends.

This home is available for writers, artists, composers and other creatives who seek solitude in a quiet and productive setting for self-directed writing-focused retreats.   The carefully restored 2,300 square-foot, two-story house with a wrap-around porch offers a spread of calm workspaces.

Staying at The Writers House is significantly different from the experience of those working at the Corsicana Artist & Writer Residency.  Those invited to The Residency in the 100W Building are participants in a social setting that includes studio visitors, open studios, public presentations and introduction to the Dallas art scenes.

Alumni of 100W are offered a reduced rate if they wish to add a private retreat time at the end of their Residency period or to return later to work independently.

The inversion of the experience in the 100W building is what the Writers House offers.  The Writers House is not an entry into The Corsicana Artist & Writers Residency.  The Writers House is designed for inward creative work for those desiring a peaceful inspiring place for reflection, private time and meditation.  The Writers House is a perfect setting for academic sabbatical work.

Retreat groups thrive in this private yet expansive site. Gatherings can be held in various rooms and on porches; individuals have ample settings for private contemplative time. A second beautiful, similarly restored home across the street may be available to include in the rental for the comfort of a larger group.

This special place has been realized through three years careful restoration and updating by business partners Nancy Rebal and Jean Searcy.

Most of the light fixtures and woodwork throughout are original, as are the stained glass windows. The two stained glass panels flanking the front door are hand-painted with the words ‘JUSTICE' and ‘MERCY’.

There are five fireplaces, no longer functional. Two are on the ground floor, three are found upstairs, one in each bedroom.

Significant architectural elements were harvested from a 1916 Dallas mansion which was demolished.

The house is completely furnished with beautiful antiques, a baby grand piano and art and porcelains given by friends who believe in this project.

On the ground floor are living room, dining room, baby grand piano room, dining room, library of art and literature, breakfast room, full kitchen, laundry room with washer and dryer and a small bathroom with a shower.

All kitchen appliances, cookware and dishes are provided.

Each floor has new central air-conditioning and heat.

Wifi and internet are included.

Three bedrooms upstairs each include a desk, full-sized bed with new mattress, as well as a chest of drawers and a closet.

The former sleeping porch is now the tiny-room-with-a-view. And a desk.

Two upstairs bathrooms, each with a shower, are accessed from the hallway.

All bedding and linens are provided.

The length of stay in this historic home is entirely customizable.

Usually two guests are hosted simultaneously.
